Should all hybrid publishing contracts be viewed with caution ? I was offered one by Olympia Publishers . They seem to have an established presence on social media and appear very open about what they can offer. Yet some advice strongly against ever paying to be published. In a very competitive market , is this true ? Thanks, Grace

Hi Grace, huge apologies for the delay in coming back to your query about this. We would definitely recommend approaching hybrid publishing contracts with caution and care. If this is something you are seriously considering, then make sure you can employ a legal expert who would be able to read over your contract and make suggestions/recommendations. This does, of course, mean that you are likely to pay for upfront costs. While the world of publishing is changing, we do still believe that getting published shouldn't mean that you have to pay large amounts of money up front, especially if this is something you aren't able to afford.

The Society of Authors also have a wealth of knowledge and do have a contract vetting service that might be of interest: https://www2.societyofauthors.org/2021/02/16/what-do-we-look-for-when-w…

I'd recommend looking at the Alliance of Independent Authors - and possibly even becoming a member - as they are a great community with a wealth of knowledge of hybrid publishers/self-publishing companies etc.

If you have any other questions about the publishing process, do comment and I'll get back to you as I appreciate the difficulty of fitting EVERYTHING into one single article!
